Most cities and towns have smaller, non-incorporated areas. Ventura County is no different. Here is a list of several in our area:
1. Bardsdale, two miles south of Fillmore. Thomas Bard helped to found this community in 1887 partly when it appeared that construction of the railroad would end the area's isolation.
2. Bell Canyon, eight miles southeast of Simi Valley. Although it is in Ventura County, this exclusive residential community can be reached only from Los Angeles County.
3. Cabrillo Village, east side of Ventura, was built in the 1930's by the Saticoy Lemon Association for the field workers. Later, in the 1970's, the workers bought the land and formed a cooperative to run the community.
4. El Rio, just north of Oxnard. Although settlers had known to be in the area since 1868, Simon Cohn, a merchant, founded the town in 1875. The name means "the river" in Spanish.
5. Faria Beach, along the Rincon, north of Ventura. Named for the family of Manuel Faria, a native of the Azore Islands, who arrived in 1908.
6. Hollywood Beach, just west of the Construction Battalion Center in Oxnard. This community was so named because Rudolph Valentino filmed "The Sheik" in the area. It was hoped that it would become another movie colony. The Hollywood-by-the-Sea and Silver Strand beach areas were also constructed nearby at the same time.
7. Lake Sherwood, three miles south of Thousand Oaks. The lake is so named because of the movie "Robin Hood", which was filmed there in 1922.
8. Montalvo, surrounded by Ventura. Named for the Spanish author Garcia Ordonez de Montalvo?s musings, written about 1510, ?on the right hand of the Indies there is an island called California" which was "an earthly paradise."
9. Newbury Park, surrounded by Thousand Oaks, was named for the first postmaster, Egbert Starr Newbury and later "Park" was added because of the many trees in the area.
10. Oak Park, North of Agoura Hills. Named for the Oaks in the area.
11. Piru, 10 miles east of Fillmore, was named from an Indian word for reeds, which grow along the creek banks that were used for making baskets.
12. Point Mugu, six miles southeast of Port Hueneme, is an important wetlands area and is overseen by the navy who has a base in that area. The name is a Chumash Indian word, (muwu), meaning beach. It is the oldest recorded name in California history, as Cabrillo mentioned it by 1542.
13. Saticoy, nine miles east of Ventura. The name is of Indian origin and is referenced in the early 1800's.
14. Seacliff, nine miles northwest of Ventura, is a small cluster of homes along the Rincon.
15. Solimar Beach, five miles northwest of Ventura. This name was created to suggest the Spanish "sol y mar" or sun and sea.
16. Somis, three miles northeast of Camarillo. The name is an unknown Indian word and appears as "Somes" in 1795 mission records.
17. Summit, 10 miles northeast of Santa Paula, is at the summit of Highway 150 between Santa Paula and Ojai.
